Kenya's opposition candidate has withdrawn from the election rerun

President Uhuru Kenyatta

Kenya is due on October 26 to repeat a presidential election after the Supreme Court nullified an August 8 vote due to procedural irregularities.

Raila Odinga, Kenyan opposition leader, has pulled out of the presidential rerun elections slated for 26 October.

While Odinga expressed confidence the vote will be canceled, Kenyatta told listeners at a campaign stop, "We have no problem going back to elections".

Odinga had been threatening to withdraw if his demand for the removal of six officials at the election board was not met.

The NASA leader announced he will no longer participate in the October 26 election as ordered by the Supreme Court.

The 25-item document included a comprehensive audit of elections-related technology, a change of the company that printed the ballot forms, and the replacement of all 290 elections officers.

His withdrawal comes weeks after his opponent Uhuru Kenyatta threatened to "fix" the judiciary who nullified the latter's election win.

"And the people of Kenya will have the right to choose and determine who their leader shall be", he said.

Odinga says he can not participate in the election under the existing circumstances, arguing that the contest can not be free and fair.

Hundreds of demonstrators marched through the Kenyan capital on Monday demanding election reforms, as a rights group said at least 37 people were killed in three days of protests that followed the voided presidential vote in August.

The opposition had said the elections had been fraught with irregularities despite electoral observers calling it free and fair.

Kenyatta has said he does not want changes to the electoral commission.

Because there were no nominations for the repeat polls, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission declared the incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila the only two candidates through a gazette notice which effectively became nomination.

The uncertainty has also hamstrung east Africa's largest economy, leading to a slowdown in business across the private sector.

The electoral commission tweeted that they were meeting with their legal team and "will communicate the way forward".

Earlier Chebukati said it did respond to the opposition's irreducible minimums and can guarantee the integrity of the fresh presidential election.

Kenyatta expressed confidence that Kenyans will rally behind him as they did in the August 8 general election.
