Kevin Hogan replaces DeShone Kizer as Browns' starting QB

Cleveland Browns quarterback Kevin Hogan shown during the Oct. 8 game will start Oct. 15 when the Browns take on the Texans in Houston

Hogan's first start of the season will come on Sunday, Oct. 15 on the road against the Houston Texans.

On Wednesday, Browns head coach Hue Jackson released a statement explaining his decision to go with Kevin Hogan over Kizer in Week 6.

"This does not change the way we feel about DeShone going forward".

Hogan, who was selected in the fifth-round of the 2016 NFL Draft, replaces rookie Deshone Kizer. "Right now, it's better for him and his development to back up Kevin".

Jackson changed that position Monday, though, saying he would "ride through the ups and downs until I determine that the ups and downs are too much", and that he had stuck with Kizer through plenty of growing pains.

In four starts, he's has led the offense to 30 or more points three times, posted an ESPN QBR over 88.0 three times and thrown 12 touchdowns with only four interceptions. He also has rushed five times for 35 yards. He was waived in the final cuts and claimed by the Browns before the Chiefs could sign him to their own practice squad. He was named the Browns' starting quarterback entering the regular season but has struggled.

Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas joined the Browns as the third overall pick in 2007, and he has blocked for an inordinate number of starting quarterbacks.

Through five games Kizer has completed 50.9 percent of his passes for 851 yards, with 3 touchdowns and an NFL-high 9 interceptions, for a quarterback rating of 49.5, which ranks 32nd in the league among qualifying players. Hogan completed 16-of-19 passes for two touchdowns and an interception after taking over. He has a 104.8 passer rating.
