Mercedes recalls 400000 United Kingdom cars on airbag fault

Mercedes-Benz has announced a major recall in light of malfunctioning airbags in cars built between 2011 and July this year.

Affected models include certain Mercedes-Benz A-Class, B-Class, C-Class and E-Class models, as well as CLA, GLC, GLK and V-Class.

While there have reportedly been no incidences of airbags unintentionally deploying in the United Kingdom, the recall has been triggered by several cases worldwide.

The auto manufacturer said affected customers would be contacted about having their vehicle recalled and repaired.

The will fix take "around one hour" and the work will be performed free of charge, it said.

The company's statement said it would be contacting the owners of the models affected shortly, but urged drivers not to use their vehicles as a precaution if the airbag warning light was lit in red on the dashboard. The core of the problem is said to be a malfunctioning clock spring in the steering column, which could cause accidental detonation of the airbag system.

It also stressed that the recall is not linked to the exploding Takata airbag scandal.

The firm added: 'This is not related to any Takata recall'.

In a bid to maintain the safety of its consumer base and promote safe driving, Mercedes initiated the recall to replace the steering column module clock spring, which, if broken, could trigger an incorrect airbag warning.
