Nick Kyrgios walks off court after losing first set at Shanghai Open

Roger Federer hits a ball at the US Open

Kyrgios served a ban from the ATP Tour a year ago after showing a lack of effort in a second-round match against Mischa Zverev and arguing with the umpire and fans.

The 22-year-old, who lost the China Open final to Rafael Nadal two days ago following a run of fine form, cut a frustrated and disinterested figure at the competition for the second year running.

Despite television footage and audio capturing the Australian hot-head telling his courtside box he'd quit after the first set in an apparent protest over the decisions of chair umpire Fergus Murphy, Kyrgios claimed he was both injured and ill.

Kyrgios and Johnson were both comfortable on their serves and they went into the tie break with signs Kyrgios was beginning to lose his cool. After Johnson served an ace to win the breaker 7-5, Kyrgios walked over to shake hands.

This isn't the first instance of Kyrgios tanking or forfeiting a match. He was docked a point to put the score to 4-4.

"I've been battling a stomach bug for the last 24 hours and I tried to be ready but I was really struggling on the court today, which I think was pretty evident from the first point".

Firebrand Australian Nick Kyrgios believes he has found his life's objective in helping underprivileged children and he is planning to set up a facility for them in Melbourne.

The talent is there but only Kyrgios himself can set it free it for everyone to enjoy.

"Once I lost the first set I was just not strong enough to continue", he wrote. His shoulder had also started to hurt that day while practicing. "It felt like Atlanta in August". No. 1 seed Nadal defeated the Australian with a 6-2 6-1 score to lift the Beijing title.

Also, Croatia's Marin Cilic, a Wimbledon finalist this year, defeated Kyle Edmund of Britain 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the second round in a night match.

US Open finalist Kevin Anderson of South Africa began by defeating Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-1, and Ryan Harrison of the United States beat local wildcard Zhang Ze 6-2, 6-3.
