Over 37000 Chrome Users Installed a Fake AdBlock Plus Extension

Fraudulent ad-blocking extension tricks 37000 Google Chrome users

While acknowledging that the fake extension was removed from the store fairly quickly, Adblock Plus questions how it got there in the first place.

Google allows 37,000 Chrome users to be tricked with a fake extension by fraudulent developer who clones popular name and spams keywords. It also provides instructions for anyone who is concerned that they may have a malicious version of the extension installed.

It's not clear exactly what may have caused the fake extension to bypass Google's vetting process for the Chrome Web Store, and in addition, the company has yet to address the issue of how easy it is for fraudulent developers to pop up on the store pretending to be legitimate extensions.

This can not be dismissed as a stand-alone case, when it comes to fake apps in the Chrome web store.

Users could have spotted the fake extension based on the blob of unrelated keywords the fraudulent developer added to the extension's description. According to @SwiftOnSecurity, there are fake copies of popular extensions present on the web store that go unnoticed quite often.

Discovered by a security researcher going by the pseudonym of SwiftOnSecurity, the extension [1, 2] had over 37,000 users at the time it was taken down late last night.

Apparently, a fake Adblock Plus extension made it through Google's verification process and lived in the official Chrome Web Store alongside the real one.

Google has announced a number of steps to combat annoying ads over recent months. Further, the executive said that filtering will be done considering what is user-friendly and what is not based on the standards set by the Coalition for Better Ads.

Hallelujah. Starting in January 2018, Chrome is going to save us from autoplay videos.
