Pierre Gasly keeps Toro Rosso seat for US GP, Daniil Kvyat returns

Now, that move will finally happen following Formula One's Japanese Grand Prix.

Therefore, Sainz is disputing in Japan his last race with Toro Rosso and debuts dressed in yellow in Austin (October 22), advancing agreement that was originally planned for next season.

Renault have been keen to ditch Palmer as soon as the Sainz loan deal was announced, but Palmer continued to race at Malaysia before finally deciding to give up his seat.

Jolyon Palmer has said goodbye to Renault F1 after three years with a classy statement released on the French F1 team's Twitter page.

"Tomorrow's Japanese GP will be my last race for Renault", Palmer wrote on Instagram.

"Since Renault's return to Formula 1, Jolyon has been highly dedicated in an evolving environment".

Sainz admitted his opening lap retirement was a "sad way to end" his tenure at Toro Rosso, explaining it was simply a result of taking a risk to try and make up ground early in the race.

"We look forward to beating him on track".

"More specifically, I really want to thank all my engineers and mechanics for their support and tremendous work throughout these years".

"I respect the decision and wish the team still the best for the future, Carlos the best and we go our separate ways".

"They did an fantastic job and congratulations for that, it shows the commitment they have, and I really appreciate it".

Regarding his race through the field, Palmer stated; "From 18th on the grid, I think finishing 12th is about as good as we could of done, apart from if we didn't have the VSC at the end [deployed for Lance Stroll's stricken Williams] and had one more lap".

All of those were scored in one race, in Singapore where he was sixth out of just 12 finishers, leaving 15 other complete blanks.

Gasly and Kvyat are now likely to form Toro Rosso's 2018 driver line-up, although Pascal Wehrlein is considered an outside contender.

The Brit was going to be replaced by Carlos Sainz, but why hang around for the inevitable?
