Ruling against Ezekiel Elliott means Roger Goodell can suspend the Cowboys RB

Not Released

Thursday, a federal appeals court overturned a district court's ruling - essentially reinstating Elliott's six game NFL-imposed suspension for domestic violence.

The ruling removes a temporary injunction granted to Elliott, that allowed him to play while the suspension was fought in court.

So, what does it all mean?

At least for now, Elliott's six-game suspension is free to take hold, but things could be different by this time next week. The Cowboys, who have a record of 2-3, are on their bye week. The NFL players' union sued on Elliott's behalf.

As a result, both Elliott and the NFLPA may now need to file for another injunction in Southern District of NY in order for the second-year running back to continue playing. The league filed paperwork asking U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant to make a decision by September 14; otherwise, the league would take the case to the 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.

District Court Judge Amos Mazzant III issued the preliminary injunction last month after agreeing with the NFLPA that Elliott didn't receive a fair suspension appeal hearing from Goodell-appointed arbitrator Harold Henderson. Elliott can not show it was futile to wait for a final decision simply because he believed the arbitrator would issue an unfavorable ruling.

Elliott was originally suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in August after the league concluded he had several physical confrontations last summer with his former girlfriend, Tiffany Thompson. In a letter sent to Elliott informing him of suspension in August, the National Football League stated it believed he used physical force against Thompson three times over a span of five days in July 2016.

Elliott, 22, has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
