Rupp, Dibaba win first major marathons at Chicago

Dennis Kimetto celebrates winning the 2013 Bank of America Chicago Marathon in 2:03:45

For the first time in 15 years, an American male has won the Chicago Marathon.

Rupp, born four years after Meyer's victory, won a 10,000 metres silver medal behind his British training partner Sir Mo Farah at the London 2012 Olympics.

But ultimately she came up slightly short of the course record.

Florence Kiplagat's 10km time of 32:28 was also 19 seconds faster than Radcliffe's record split but by 15km it was Hasay, third this year in Boston, leading in 49:02, three seconds under record pace. The women pushed it from the gun, splitting 2:16-2:17 projected pace through the downtown core of Chicago. Tirunesh Dibaba of Ehtiopia was the women's victor, finishing in 2:18:30.

The Chicago Marathon is a long-standing tradition in the IL city where runners across the United States and the world gather to run through 29 neighborhoods and reach the finish line in Grant Park.

Before Sunday, Khalid Khannouchi was the last American victor when he crossed the finish line first in 2002.

The Ethiopian attacked shortly before the field passed halfway in 1:08.48 before breaking clear from Kenyan rival Brigid Kosgei in the 19th mile. And Dibaba won at London in April in 2:17:56, becoming the third-fastest woman at the distance on a similar flat course.

Last year's champion Abel Kirui of Kenya finished second. Stanley Biwott, a 2:03:51 marathoner and victor of New York City in 2015, dropped out shortly after.

The lead pack slowly dwindled over the next 10km, leaving only Rupp, Kirui and Ethiopia's Sisay Lemma after 22 miles.

Rupp was second at the Boston Marathon.

Rupp posted the two best miles of the race on Miles 23 and 24, finishing them in 4:35 and 4:31. She stayed with the lead pack throughout and finished in third place with a time of 2:20:57.
