Solange Knowles tells Evening Standard: 'Don't Touch My Hair'

The cover, handsome and artful as it is, did not come without a bit of controversy when Solange fans noticed that the Evening Standard had retouched the image of Solange's epic braid crown.

The Evening Standard Magazine appears to have removed a braided crown from Knowles's head in its cover image this week.

Solange herself shared an image of the unedited look with the caption, "dtmh", or, "don't touch my hair". On the Evening Standard cover, Knowles' hair was digitally altered and her signature Orion crown braid was erased.

The Evening Standard has published full photos of Knowles on its website and Instagram page.

This prompted several people to leave comments below the magazine's own post, asking why editors changed her hair. The cover story included a gorgeous photo shoot and multiple quotes from Solange about the importance, pride, and power of hair in her own life and the lives of black women. Instead, the image has been retouched so that she appears to be wearing simple braids which - although lovely in their own right - are only the first layer of the overall look.

"Braiding is important to Knowles", the article actually reads.

Speaking to ES magazine about the pampering parlour, the "Don't Touch My Hair" hitmaker said: "I got to experience women arriving in one state of mind and leaving in a completely transformed way. It was about the sisterhood and the storytelling", Knowles said in the interview.

Then Solange posted more images of Petit-Frére's work on her Instagram story, as a sort of appreciation for her work. The look takes inspiration from sculpture, African art, and the Orion constellation (which Solange has tattooed on her inner right arm).

The Evening Standard has not yet responded.

The Evening Standard shared the whole breathtaking photoshoot inside the magazine-seriously, I audibly gasped and was momentarily robbed of my breath-on its own Instagram feed and Solange's hair is intact in every photo.
