Steven Spielberg Signs Deal with Apple to Bring Back Amazing Stories

Apple Steven Spielberg info details

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has struck a deal with Steven Spielberg to produce new episodes of a classic 1980s sci-fi and horror anthology. It did not attract wide enough audiences and was canceled but has seen developed devoted cult following, something streaming services crave. The new show will reportedly cost upwards of $5 million per episode ($10 million per episode is considered very expensive).

For those too young to remember, Amazing Stories was a sci-fi/horror series that ran rom 1985 to 1987 on NBC. Apple made the deal with Mr. Spielberg's Amblin Television and NBCUniversal's production arm.

"It's wonderful to be reunited with our colleagues Zack [Van Amburg] and Jamie [Erlicht] in their new capacity at Apple", said NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke in a statement. Still, the lingering questions have not stopped Hollywood talent and their reps from barraging the deep-pocketed company, which hired Van Amburg and Erlicht from Sony Television in June to spearhead Apple's content acquisitions and video strategy, which spec scripts.

It's maybe an odd choice - a not-widely-remembered '80s TV show - but "odd" is also the way you might describe Apple's foray into original content to begin with.

The company, however, is looking to change that, slowly but surely. Its Carpool Karaoke spin-off series debuted this fall, and Cupertino unveiled an app development competition series (called Planet of the Apps) at WWDC this summer. Details on when Amazing Stories would come to fruition or how it would be released were not available.
