Terrorist plot targeting NYC concerts, subways and landmarks foiled by investigators

They also allegedly discussed with undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation agents plans to detonate a auto in Times Square. Investigators described the plot as inspired by the ISIS terror group, but it was more aspiration than operational.

On May 21, 2016, El Bahnasawy was arrested in New Jersey, after traveling to the United States from Canada in preparation for carrying out the NYC attacks.

According to the court documents, El Bahnasawy and Haroon claimed to the undercover agent to have contacts with an ISIS branch known as Khorasan Province, which is active in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Prosecutors told a New York court the three men wanted to target heavily populated areas of New York City during Ramadhan in 2016.

He sent the undercover agent maps of the subway system and identified which lines to target with their explosives, the DOJ said.

He also expressed a desire to "shoot up concerts cause they kill a lot of people".

At one point he sent his co-conspirators photos of Times Square, saying, "We seriously need a auto bomb at Times Square". That's how they did in Paris, "he wrote".

Meanwhile, Haroon allegedly felt that the NY subway was a "perfect" target, telling the undercover there would be plenty of "women and kids" to target and adding: 'when we run out of bullets we let the vests go off'.

"When we run out of bullets we let the vests go off".

He continued: "They want an operation in Times Square". In early May 2016, he purchased on the internet about 40 pounds of hydrogen peroxide, a critical ingredient in the explosive TATP, which is frequently used by Isis, and shipped it to the undercover agent, court documents said. Salic, a 37-year-old resident of the Philippines, is accused of financing the plot by wiring money from the Philippines to Haroon and El Bahnasawy.

The three were charged a year ago with plotting to make the attack in the summer of 2016.

Attorney information for the three men wasn't immediately available.

The US has requested both men's extradition. Stephen Paddock slaughtered 58 individuals before taking his own life in his inn room. That parallels the Paris attacks, but also Brussels and Mumbai. In 2016, a bomber who the terrorist group called "a soldier of the Khaliafah" killed 20 people at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England. In 2015, a rock concert in Paris became the scene of an ISIS-inspired mass shooting, and in May, an Ariana Grande concert in the United Kingdom was the victim of a bombing. They also planned to shoot civilians at a number of concerts.

Federal authorities said Paddock may have cased other venues in the months leading up to the Las Vegas attack, which has prompted law-enforcement and city officials to come to grips with the possibility that such venues could be vulnerable to copycat attacks.

Fortunately, Haroon made the proclamation to an undercover agent - and now all three men have been busted on terror charges, the feds said.
