Third Frisco resident infected with West Nile virus

The primary way people get West Nile virus is through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Denton County health officials confirmed that a Frisco resident was infected with West Nile virus, making this the third human case of the virus this year.

The Ohio Department of Health is reporting a total of 22 human cases of West Nile virus across the state.

Counties with one case each are Bolivar, Clarke, Clay, Covington, DeSoto, Jones, Lauderdale, Leake, Leflore, Noxubee, Perry, Sunflower, Wilkinson and Yazoo. In recent years, OH reported 17 human West Nile Virus cases in 2016 including four deaths, 35 in 2015 including two deaths and 11 in 2014 including one death. Fortunately, most people infected with WNV do not have symptoms.

Some people experience mild symptoms such as fever, headache and body aches, which subside after a few days to weeks.

"Detection in chickens means there is a risk of potential spread to humans via mosquitoes", Santa Barbara County Public Health Officer Dr. Charity Dean said in a statement. "Mosquito season in OH lasts until the first freeze which is not usually until mid-October".

Health officials are urging residents to protect themselves from mosquitoes by avoiding outdoor activity when mosquitoes are most active - at dusk and dawn.

When outdoors, wear long trousers and long-sleeved shirts and use mosquito repellents.

Wear loose, light-colored, long clothing to cover the arms and legs when outdoors.

Ensure that door and window screens are tight-fitting and in good fix.
