Trump Picks Top White House Aide to run Homeland Security

Nielsen was former DHS Secretary John Kelly's deputy when he served in that role and moved with Kelly to the White House when he was tapped to be Trump's chief of staff.

"I don't think I'm being fired today and I am not so frustrated in this job that I'm thinking of leaving", Kelly said in a light-hearted moment with reporters.

When asked what frustrates the president, Kelly laughed and said he thought that it was the media.

"[Gen. Kelly] puts to rest an very bad lot of these rumors and this conjecture and these plain out fictions that we see every single day", she said on "The Intelligence Report".

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday Kirstjen Nielsen as his pick for Department of Homeland Security Secretary.

He later added, "Unless things change, I'm not quitting I'm not getting fired and I don't think I'll fire anyone tomorrow".

"People should be concerned about a state that has developed a pretty good ICBM capability", Kelly said, addressing the threat to Guam as well as the USA mainland. Earlier in the briefing he critiqued the media multiple times, saying it is "astounding" how much the press misreports about the White House.

"All of you", he told the White House press corps.

He called being chief of staff "the hardest job I've ever had", and admitted it wasn't the best one he's ever held - that would be his time as an enlisted Marine. All of you. Not all of you, but many of you.

But he offered the assembled reporters a piece of advice: "Maybe develop some better sources".

"Let's hope that diplomacy works", he said. Kelly was elevated to the post from homeland security secretary in July. "But I listen to everybody and ultimately I will do what's right for the United States and really what's right for the world", he said, adding, "it's a problem that has to be solved".

Kelly's extraordinary statements are the latest examples of Trump administration officials professing their loyalty publicly Trump, refuting reports that suggest problems in the chaotic administration.
