Trump refutes NBC story, suggests challenging its broadcasting license

President Donald Trump shown in a meeting Tuesday with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger reportedly told his generals in July that he wanted a massive expansion of America's nuclear weapons arsenal

The President's denial was buttressed by a statement from his defence chief.

A quick search of Conway's Twitter feed shows at least one instance of her using the term "fake news", but she has split with the president on the issue in the past.

President Donald Trump told the nation's highest ranking security leaders this past summer that he wanted to increase the US nuclear arsenal by almost 10 times, according to a new report Wednesday.

In conversations with TIME on Wednesday, a number of Republican lawmakers dismissed concerns over Trump's assaults on the media as hyperbolic. On some days, the majority of the tweets fluttering from the Oval Office focus on the press. The State Department last week denied that Tillerson called Trump a moron, although the secretary declined to deny the report himself.

Two officials present said that at multiple points in the discussion, the president expressed a desire not just for more nuclear weapons, but for additional USA troops and military equipment.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump tweeted other jabs at NBC.

Some officials present said they did not take Trump's desire for more nuclear weapons to be literally instructing the military to increase the actual numbers. "And you have a responsibility to tell the truth, to be accurate". "That was just fake news by NBC, which gives a lot of fake news lately", Trump said when asked about the article during a press conference.

FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel offered a brief response to Trump, saying that's "not how it works" and linking to a manual that discusses the FCC's regulation of broadcast radio and TV licenses.

He called the report "pure fiction" that was "made up to demean".

The July 20 meeting followed one held the day before at the White House Situation Room, when Trump asked military leaders to fire the commander of US forces in Afghanistan. "I mean, I've seen tremendously dishonest press".

Trump has voiced inconsistent opinions on the nuclear arsenal, at one point expressing a desire to "greatly strengthen and expand [US] nuclear capability" and in other instances insisting he does not think the arsenal should grow in size.

The report comes as Trump is preparing for an 11-day trip to Asia, where he will seek to bolster global support to pressure North Korea to curb its nuclear and ballistic missile weapons testing. When Richard Nixon was president, he "read a summary of each morning's news and then directed his staff how to respond, noting in the margins which reporters he liked and disliked", according to The Atlantic.
