United Nations refugee agency alarmed by surge in fleeing Rohingya migrants

Criticism Aung San Suu Kyi

Several thousand Rohingya fleeing violence in Myanmar surged into Bangladesh on Monday, officials said, with reports of children dying from hunger, exhaustion and fever among the latest wave of refugees. "I can't find my relatives ..."

Cox's Bazar: The bodies of another nine refugees have washed up in Bangladesh after an overloaded boat carrying scores of desperate Rohingya sank in rough seas, police said today, taking the confirmed death toll to 23. This was reported on Monday by the Reuters, referring to the draft document on possible measures against Myanmar, which is now being discussed by representatives of European Union countries at the central bodies of the community.

Dhaka: Bangladesh Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali on Tuesday said a total of 3,000 Rohingya Muslims were killed since August 25, following the army operation in the Rakhine State of Myanmar.

The World Food Programme (WFP) said the cuts were temporary and due to delays in receiving payments.

No Rohingya had entered the state till date, the official asserted.

The reports of food shortages will add to the urgency of calls by aid agencies and the worldwide community for unfettered humanitarian access to the conflict zone.

The government denied accusation of ethnic cleansing, and had rebuffed the insurgents' ceasefire, saying it would not negotiate with terrorists.

He said building temporary facilities that may last only a month was more important than constructing permanent structures, as the current settlements themselves are not permanent. But even as refugees arrive, Bangladesh insists they will all have to go home.

The military, which ran the country for 50 years until 2015, has stoked the view that the Rohingya are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh bent on claiming the Buddhist land.

Amid mounting global pressure, Myanmar's de-facto leader Aung Sun Suu Kyi addressed the parliament on Sep 19, when she said they were ready to take back "verified refugees" in line with a deal signed in 1992.

The United States and Britain have warned Myanmar the crisis is threatening to discredit significant progress made by the country since it began moving away from military rule.
