#WebExtra: Amazon Offers Account for Teens

Amazon now lets teenagers shop via separate logins attached to their parents' accounts

The company announced today that kids ages 13-17 will be able to use an Amazon Household account to shop Amazon's online marketplace - with limited independence, of course.

Perhaps more importantly for Amazon, Prime Student opens up a new possible revenue stream with a cohort of consumers that will always be there-and will always be replenished year after year.

When a teen wants to order, they can go onto the Amazon App and the parents will receive a text or email showing them the item, cost and payment information.

The online retail giant said Wednesday that teens can now shop on Amazon on their own, if their parents let them.

Under Amazon's new program, teenagers can log into the site using their own credentials. Parents are shown the item, how much it costs, and similar details, as well as any note about it the teen may have made.

A Household allows you to connect and share Amazon benefits with the whole family.

Teen logins allow teens to shop on their own and parents approve the order with a simple text. Parents then approve or deny the order, though the system can be set to automatically approve orders if desired. But for parents who don't want to review everything in advance, the option to set pre-approved spending limits is available, too. Teens get greater freedom and parents still get itemized notifications of orders. But if they do pay for Prime, teens will also get access to free shipping, streaming video and Prime's other perks.

Amazon - which had annual revenue of $136 billion a year ago - accounts for roughly one-third of all online US sales. Signing up takes moments for both teens and parents.
