We're Going All-Electric (Someday) — GM Exec

General Motors will introduce 20 new all-electric vehicles by 2023, with two being introduced for the 2019 model year.

He declined to specify what type of new models will be built off the Bolt's underpinnings, but the chief of G.M.'s electrification strategy, Pam Fletcher, said the company is focusing on the development of sport utility vehicles and car-based crossover models. The largest of Detroit's Big Three automakers also revealed a fuel-cell-powered heavy-duty truck concept dubbed SURUS, that could be used for a variety of purposes, such as a delivery vehicle or first-responder vehicle.

The company delivered 26,150 electric cars, its best quarter in history and 4.5 percent higher than its previous best quarter, from July through September 2016.

However, Reuss stressed that GM remains committed to making its internal combustion engines more efficient.

"General Motors believes in an all-electric future", stated Mark Reuss, General Motors executive vice president of Product Development, Purchasing, and Supply Chain.

GM has previously announced plans to make some of its future electric vehicles capable of driving themselves in robot taxi fleets. Reuss was bullish on GM's ability to turn a profit, however.

Toyota will report sales of its Prius Prime plug-in hybrid later today, and numbers for a host of lower-volume plug-in vehicles will follow during the balance of the day.

Batteries are getting cheaper and lighter, Reuss said. It's unclear whether GM will begin to repurpose existing designs by stuffing batteries in them, or whether the company is working on developing completely new platforms from the ground up. It is rated at 238 miles per charge. The first two of the series will rollout in the next 18 months.

Mahindra and Mahindra, which has been present in the electric segment for long now, has disclosed plans to launch electric variants of its flagship SUVs Scorpio and XUV500. He noted that the technology is advancing quickly and that more progress is expected.

The announcements provide a broad signal that traditional automakers have accepted electrification, but it's still clear that majority are unsure how fast it will take place.

"If they're still going to be a global player, they've still got to move ahead" even if the Trump administration rolls back fuel economy standards in the U.S., Krebs said. And pressures are growing even tighter overseas. "China, India, France, the United Kingdom and California".

Electrification is all the rage in the auto industry, but the cars themselves represent only a tiny fraction of the entire market. GM also renewed its commitment to hydrogen fuel cell technology, a clean fuel concept that still needs major infrastructure upgrades before it can become a viable alternative. GM has not yet indicated what it intends to use the stacks for, but SURUS offers a hint.
