Yale community celebrates Indigenous People's Day

Democrat lawmaker introduces Indigenous Peoples Day bill

Liz Medicine Crow, president of First Alaskans Institute, said the idea for an event to celebrate the day began just a few days ago.

Members of the Yale community celebrated Indigenous People's Day in a series of events - ranging from speaker events to a celebratory dance performance - that took place on campus from Sunday to Monday.

Alaska is the second state to adopt the contrasting holiday. "The only thing that matches it's beauty is it's culture, and that's what we celebrate on this Indigenous Peoples Day, is the culture that binds this state together". A number of other large cities, including Los Angeles, Seattle and Denver, are also moving to rename the holiday. The protest came as the New York Police Department ringed the statue in metal barricades and said it was providing round-the-clock surveillance of the monument.

Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska President Richard Peterson said he had little patience for those who fail to understand the significance of Indigenous Peoples Day.

"Telling people the true story about what happened at the mission, what happened with Columbus Day is why we're here. But I am going to recognize our indigenous people who have been here for thousands of years".

While in Fairbanks, the University of Alaska Fairbanks held a ceremony on land that will house an indigenous studies center in the future.

Some opposed the signing of the bill, which passed both legislative bodies.

Kushi said Yale's indigenous community has grown in part because of the addition of Dinée Dorame '15 to the Yale admissions office as an assistant director and Native outreach and recruitment coordinator.
