They wrote: "It is with deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of Malcolm Young, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother".

Young and the other members of AC/DC were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

The band is also one of the best-selling in music history, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, having sold more than 70 million albums in the US.

"He was older than me - I always looked up to him", Angus Young said of his brother in an interview past year with Rolling Stone Magazine, saying he was "always one to battle through". Thank goodness and the rock gods that that's the only thing he ever did peacefully - and that he played the guitar as though peace were a foreign concept indeed. In their statement, the band wrote, "Malcolm, along with Angus, was the founder and creator of AC/DC". The band released their debut album, High Voltage, in 1975 which featured hits like "It's a long way to the top" and "High Voltage". George Young had served as producer to AC/DC and guitarist for the band Easybeats.

The "Highway To Hell" rockers posted a second time on Facebook in the same hour, where they stated the iconic musician had been surrounded by his loved ones at the time of his passing. The statement was confirmed on Saturday morning by his family.
