With Schoolies underway, thousands of students have flocked to Indonesia or are expected to fly this week.

A volcano on the Indonesian island of Bali has erupted for the first time in more than 50 years, the country's national disaster agency says.

Meanwhile, based on online media reports, there is no disruption in flights going to and leaving Bali.

In a statement released overnight, Virgin Australia said it was "continuing to closely monitor volcanic activity" after the minor eruption but all flights are operating as normal.

The Department of Foreign Trade is advising anyone travelling to Bali to always "exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia".

"Residents are advised to remain calm".

The danger zone around the 3,142-metre Mount Agung was also reduced from a radius of 9 to 12 kilometres from the peak in different areas to a radius of 6 to 7.5 km.

Villagers near the mount were first told to leave in August when it started rumbling but were later allowed to return home.
