Apple's iPhone 7, iPhone 6s most shipped smartphones in Q3

iPhone X Costs $115 More Than iPhone 8, Thanks to Samsung's Display and Variety of Other Materials

According to IHS Market, the iPhone X (Amazon, $1234.55) costs a bit higher than what we initially reported, which was a figure of $358.

Besides, in a bid to push the sales of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus Apple reduced the price of iPhone 7 by nearly 25%. New England Research & Management Inc. now owns 13,590 shares of the iPhone maker's stock valued at $1,299,000 after buying an additional 50 shares in the last quarter.

Publishing an analysis of the components within the iPhone X, TechInsights said the estimated cost for Apple per phone would be $466 ($US357.50), giving the tech giant a gross margin of 70 percent on every sale. In 2017's Q3, when the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were introduced (along with the iPhone X), the iPhone 8 Plus has sold more units overall; 6.3 million against the regular iPhone 8's 5.4 million, for a combined total of 11.8 million.

For the first time ever since Apple began making a larger phablet model with its "Plus" branded iPhones, the bigger edition has outsold the regular-sized model with the iPhone 8 series, according to a report from industry analysis firm Canalys.

ScientiaMobile compared usage data for all Apple iPhone models over the last quarter.

The lawsuit also claimed that before the devices in question were released, Corephotonics suggested that they and Apple could collaborate in developing the smartphones' camera features.

Apple was not the only highlight of the report, as it confirmed that Samsung maintained its spot as the top smartphone vendor in Q3 2017. Again, an interesting but welcome conundrum for Apple which shows its devices are lasting the test of time in a smartphone market that tends to move at hyper speed. Samsung's Galaxy J2 Prime went to third position with 7.8 million shipped, while Oppo took fourth and fifth place, with its A57 and R11 shipping 7.8 million and 7.2 million units respectively.

Worldwide smartphone shipments reached 375.9 million, up 5.9 percent year on year.

"Shipments of older devices, such as the iPhone 6s and SE, saw an uptick in Q3", Canalys analyst Ben Stanton said in a statement.

"The iPhone 7 also shipped strongly after its price cut in September".

When it launched its flagship handset the Note 8 in August, there was barely a whisper of a queue of buyers lining up to purchase it - despite the Note 8 carrying arguably better hardware and being offered at the same price as the iPhone X.

Another interesting question is what will Apple do to plug the glaring hole that is the iPhone 9 in the continuum of devices. Apple CEO Tim Cook in 2015 said that studies like this are "much different than the reality" and that he has "never seen one that is anywhere close to being accurate".

Samsung shipped 82.8 million smartphones in Q3, 8.2 percent more than in Q3 2016.

This was thanks to growth in its J-series, which did particularly well in India and the Middle East. For a product line aimed at driving value, not volume, this was a positive result.

"It discounted the Galaxy S8 in several major countries in Q3, which helped ease inventory buildup from the previous quarter". In total, it shipped 10.3 million devices from its Galaxy S8 range in Q3.

At first glance, Apple's anticipated fourth quarter beating of Samsung represents quite an achievement for the company and the higher-end smartphone market in which it specializes.

After Apple and Samsung, Chinese companies Huawei, OPPO and Xiaomi are predicted to be the largest smartphone players in the fourth quarter.
