Apple's much rumoured Augmented Reality headset gets a name, OS

Apple Bets Big on Augmented Reality With iPhone X

Apple has seemed largely uninterested in the virtual reality fad, and that may be because it has plans for a different kind of experience.

While many VR and AR headsets on the market require a phone to act as a the brains of the operation, Apple wants to launch a standalone AR headset that isn't reliant on your phone to work. This is part of a larger AR initiative which was kicked off by the development and the release of Apple's ARKit. Earlier this year, Apple hired an accomplished VR and AR researcher named Doug Bowman from Virginia Tech, too. The company will continue to develop the system over the next few years, including the release of more advanced software tools in 2018. Anonymous sources told Bloomberg that the HTC Vive is the headset of choice for developers.

Apple's push to create an AR headset has been expansive and aggressive, according to Bloomberg.

Cook also said in a recent earnings report that augmented reality, which overlays digital images onto the real world, will "change the way we use technology forever". Assuming Apple designs something that's cool and comfortable to wear, plus easy to use-which is an area where the company has a history. These apps allow users to peek through the display to see information - such as games or even digital furniture - placed within the real world.

Microsoft, of course, is already well ensconced in the AR/VR world, having launched a v1 HoloLens a year ago as a $3,000 Developers Edition, and has talked about a HoloLens version 2, with built-in AI processing, but that device apparently won't ship until 2019. The headset they're working on will run its own operating system, named rOS for "reality operating system", and will include its own built-in display instead of relying on the user's smartphone. It will also have a brand new OS, now labeled "rOS" for "reality operating system". "Put simply, we believe AR is going to change the way we use technology forever". It is not the first time when we noticed what Apple thinks, is the ideal form-factor for an AR headset.

Avid tech geeks will notice Apple's plans sound a lot like what Google's fledgling Daydream VR platform, which consists of the Daydream View VR headset with controller, and a special version of the Google Play Store just for discovering and installing VR apps.

As for input, the company is allegedly experimenting with touch panels, voice activation serviced by Siri and head gestures.
