AT&T ready to fight U.S. on Time Warner deal: CEO

AT&T ready to fight US on Time Warner deal: CEO

The revelation of Trump's son-in-law controversial comments came days after the reports that the US Department of Justice was forcing Time Warner to sell CNN before eventually approving the telecom giant's merger with AT&T.

"Well, I didn't make the decision", Trump said, according to the White House transcript. "That was made by a man who is actually a very respected person, a very, very respected person".

According to a Justice Department official, AT&T has offered to divest CNN. AT&T has said it won't sell CNN, a regular target of Trump's Twitter attacks against what he calls "fake news".

Trump did again raise the issue of news media consolidation.

Also, as Recode noted, in his comments on Saturday Trump also referred to his opposition to the merger on the campaign trail: "I did make a comment as to what I think". "This way, at least you can get your word out".

AT&T Inc will not sell cable network CNN to win antitrust approval of its proposed $85.4 billion purchase of media company Time Warner Inc and will fight the government in court if a negotiated settlement is not reached, the wireless company's chief executive said on Thursday. And likewise I have never offered to sell CNN.

"We'll see how that - it will probably end up being maybe litigation, maybe not".

Delrahim said he had not had any contact with the White House or the attorney general on the matter, speaking at an event at the USC Gould School of Law in Los Angeles later in the day.

"While there are plenty of good reasons to oppose AT&T's Time Warner takeover, punishing CNN for trying to hold this administration accountable isn't one of them", Free Press' president, Craig Aaron, said in a statement. As the New York Timesnoted, Delrahim insists any decision would be made on the basis of protecting competition in the market rather than politics, though the intervention is a surprise given his "more free-market-oriented Republican views".
