Australia: Ninth parliamentarian resigns as dual citizenship crisis worsens

NXT senator Skye Kakoschke Moore says she will resign over dual citizenship

South Australian senator Skye Kakoschke-Moore has revealed she is a dual citizen having inherited British citizenship from her mother.

The Australian constitution holds that MPs may not be citizens of a foreign nation, even if they are Australian citizens - and even if the additional citizenship wasn't known to the individual politicians previously.

Senator Kakoschke-Moore said the UK Home Office had advised her on Friday last week that she was a British citizen.

Kakoschke-Moore was born in Darwin in 1985.

She went on to obtain right of abode in the United Kingdom under a 1971 law and when the British Nationality Act 1981 was enacted her mother effectively became a citizen otherwise than by descent. She had previously not believed she had British citizenship and had only checked when preparing the declaration to be presented to parliament.

She added that while living in Oman, her family had been told by the British Embassy that she was not eligible for the British passport.

Xenophon said he hoped that Kakoschke-Moore would be back in the Senate soon, at least after the next Senate election.

'Based on this advice I will be resigning from the senate today and will be requesting that my matter be referred to the High Court when senate sits next week'.

On Tuesday, members of the Reserve Bank of Australia's Monetary Policy Board said that the outlook for the country's economy remained more or less on track, minutes from the bank's November 7 meeting revealed on Tuesday.

Party leader Nick Xenophon was devastated by the news, thanking the senator for her outstanding work.

The NXT has three Senate spots, as well as one member in the House of Representatives, Rebekha Sharkie - whose future is under a cloud in the citizenship crisis.

Were Senator Kakoschke-Moore to resign from parliament, she would be the ninth dual citizenship casualty.

She joins a conga line of disqualified MPs including Barnaby Joyce, John Alexander, Larissa Waters, Scott Ludlam, Malcolm Roberts, Stephen Parry, Jacqui Lambie and Fiona Nash.
