Awful news for Liverpool's Nathaniel Clyne, better news for Sadio Mane

Philippe Coutinho

Clyne sustained the injury back in July during pre-season and has not featured for Liverpool since.

Earlier this month manager Jurgen Klopp admitted Clyne's recovery had gone backwards.

Besides Clyne's long-term absence, the Reds are also running the rule over Sadio Mane who was forced to end his global duty with Senegal early last week with a suspected hamstring problem. Hot on the heels of returning to action in the 4-1 win over West Ham United, the 25-year played his part as Senegal qualified for their first World Cup in 18-years - an outing that left his long-term fitness in question.

That set-back has led to the decision to go under the knife and Liverpool have revealed there was no complications with the surgery.

It is understood Clyne travelled to London with a member of the club's medical staff for corrective surgery on Monday.

Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been deployed at right-back by Klopp in his absence while Tottenham's Kieran Trippier has been favoured by Gareth Southgate in the England set-up. The former has impressed for the Anfield outfit and his display saw him being called up to England's senior side for the first time.

Liverpool are dealing with a host of injuries to crucial first-team players with Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho, Dejan Lovren and Jordan Henderson all nursing issues.

Mane, whose old hamstring injury has recurred, will arrive in Liverpool on Tuesday and Klopp confirmed the forward will be assessed.
