Braves to name Alex Anthopoulos as next general manager

This news comes after Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported on October 2 former Braves general manager John Coppolella resigned because of a "breach of Major League Baseball rules regarding the worldwide player market".

During his tenure with the Jays, Anthopoulos was instrumental in acquiring Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion, both of whom had their best years in Toronto.

On Sunday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported Alex Anthopoulos will receive the job, and an official announcement could come at the general manager meetings this week.

There is no public proof that John Hart is connected to the violations committed by Coppolella and Blakeley, but the transition helps the Braves cover their bases if the investigation finds wrong-doing by Hart. Though Blakeley soon rescinded his resignation, he has not continued as a Braves employee and met again last week with Major League Baseball offficials in NY as part of its investigation.

Anthopoulos was the Braves' second choice for the job with Kansas City Royals GM Dayton Moore being their favourite, Sherman writes. The high-energy, 40-year-old baseball executive rejected a five-year extension with the Blue Jays at the end of the 2016 season. He pulled off deals for the likes of Josh Donaldson, Troy Tulowitzki and David Price.

Anthopoulos didn't say whether or not Hart's stepping down contributed to his decision to join the Braves after spending the last two seasons as a executive with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the reigning NL Champions.

Anthopoulos was the general manager of the Toronto Blue Jay from 2009-15.

John Hart, the president of baseball operations, will transition into a new role as a special adviser, McGuirk said.

MLB's continuing Braves investigation is said to be in the final stages, but word is that a decision about possible penalties may still be a few weeks away.

Anthopoulos actually left the Jays in very good shape, with some big-time prospects such as Vladimir Guerrero Jr., not just major-league stars.
