Chitrakoot bypoll win an example of change: Congress

Chitrakoot bypoll

Congress candidate Nilanshu Chaturvedi won the bypoll, defeating his BJP rival Shankar Dayal Tripathi by 14,133 votes.

The Congress hailed the victory as an "indication of change", Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav termed it a sign of increasing distrust and resistance of people in the BJP, while Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan accepted the result as the people's mandate.

According to the Election Commission (EC), there were 1.98 lakh voters in the Chitrakoot Assembly constituency.

The election to the constituency in Satna district was called after the death of sitting Congress legislator Prem Singh. Singh was a three-time MLA from Chitrakoot, from where he had won in 1998, 2003 and 2013.

At least 257 polling booths with VVPATs (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) machines were set up for the elections.

The counting of votes began at around 9am on Sunday amid beefed up security arrangements.

Chaturvedi led right from the start of vote count at 8 a.m. and kept increasing his winning lead, officials said. Both BJP and Congress had fielded their best and the stern contest was among 12 candidates. The two parties had relied on big names to campaign for their respective candidates. In the last 20 years, the Congress had only lost the seat just once in 2008, when BJP's Surendra Singh Gaharwar defeated Singh by a slender margin of 722.

Congress party workers in Chitrakoot were seen on roads with colours and drums.

Congress spokesperson Rajdeep Surjewala took to Twitter to express his delight over the win and wrote, "The winds of change are in the air".
