Eight-time MLB All-Star pitcher Roy Halladay died on Tuesday at the age of 40 in a plane crash in the Gulf of Mexico, just off the coast of Pasco County, Florida, law enforcement officials confirmed.

Halladay, who played for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Philadelphia Philies, tweeted frequently about his love for flying.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office said the dad-of-two sent no mayday calls before he went down at around 1pm local time.

The company said they were notified of the crash and they are investigating the incident.

Halladay pitched at the NBC World Series in Wichita back in July.

He pitched the 20th ideal game in Major League Baseball history in 2010, and threw the second no-hitter in postseason history later that season.

Last month, Halladay on Twitter saying he'd dreamed of owning an Icon A5 aircraft since he retired.

Halladay won the NL Cy Young award in 2010 while with the Phillies.

"Halladay is the ultimate competitor", former Phillies teammate Chase Utley told mlb.com upon Halladays retirement in December 2013. It was no coincidence why he was the best pitcher of his era.

Aerial footage from FOX 13 showed a badly damaged light-colored plane upside-down in the water, with several emergency boats circling.

This is a developing story.
