David Cassidy's 7 Most Memorable Television Roles

"David died surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long".

David Cassidy could sell the heck out of uncertainty.

Cassidy, who lived in Florida late in life, was married three times and is survived by his son, Beau, and his daughter, Katie, who have both had their own careers in show business.

Cassidy returned to the stage in the years that followed, replacing Donny Osmond in the 1982 Broadway revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and taking over for Michael Crawford in the high-tech Las Vegas production of EFX in 1997.

The 70s heartthrob had been hospitalised last week and died on Tuesday surrounded by family.

But it was Cassidy's enduring on-screen relationship with his real-life stepmother Shirley Jones in the hit TV series The Partridge Family that helped cement his place in American pop culture.

While he was best known for his music, Cassidy had a number of television stints after his break Partridge Family break, and was even nominated for an Emmy in 1978.

The magnitude and speed of Cassidy's fame was noted by Rolling Stone in a 1972 article.

"I was in denial, but a part of me always knew this was coming", the 67 year old told People. Cassidy maintained an exhausting schedule during the show's run, filming during the week and performing live shows over the weekend, but had plenty of time to indulge himself.

He went on to enjoy a hugely successful pop career and scored two United Kingdom number ones with How Can I Be Sure and Daydreamer.

In recent years he struggled with alcohol problems and was arrested three times for drink-driving between 2010 and 2014. "I was her biological father but I didn't raise her", he told People magazine in 2017. "She has a completely different life".

Cassidy was one of the original celebabies, born into stardom to famed singer-actor Jack Cassidy and actress Evelyn Ward.

The Daydreamer singer had previously watched his grandfather battle the disease, before watching his mother "disappear" into dementia before her death.

After signing on to the "Partridge Family" to play Keith Partridge in 1970, Cassidy's singing career took off.

"I mean, how much could an actor do with a line like, 'Hi, Mom, I'm home from school, ' or 'Please pass the milk?'" he wrote in his memoir. "After all, I wasn't the star of it. Shirley had top billing; I was just one of the kids".
