DC Has Fired Editor Eddie Berganza Over Claims of Sexual Harassment

Three former DC employees accused editor Eddie Berganza of sexual assault while they worked for the company.

Warner Bros and DC Entertainment have fired DC Comics Group Editor Eddie Berganza after investigating sexual assault claims against him.

Berganza was the top editor for some of DC's major comic titles and had daily interaction with writers, artists, and other editors.

According to BuzzFeed, Berganza "developed a reputation for making offensive jokes or line-crossing comments in the presence of or at the expense of women". The article alleged that Berganza had been engaging in the behavior for years but rose through the comic book publisher's ranks despite his alleged actions. Cartoonist Joan Hilty said Berganza kissed and groped her at McGee's in the early 2000s. Rumors of harassment had long followed Berganza.

Berganza, 53, had been at DC Comics since the 1990s and worked on Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman titles. And then in 2010, former DC editor Janelle Asselin organized a group of employees to file a joint complaint to HR about Berganza. "While we can not comment on specific personnel matters, DC takes allegations of discrimination and harassment very seriously, promptly investigates reports of misconduct and disciplines those who violate our standards and policies". Berganza, who was up for a promotion to executive editor at the time, received that promotion anyway. In fact, Berganza's predatory behavior has reportedly been a topic of discussion around the comic book industry for years. She told BuzzFeed that all the women she knew who were involved in the complaint eventually left DC. In light of those allegations, Berganza's work at DC had ceased while the company conducted a "review" of the accusations.

In response to this news DC said in a statement: 'DC and Warner Bros are unequivocally committed to cultivating a work environment of dignity and respect, one that is safe and harassment free for all employees'.

The statement added that DC Comics was 'committed to eradicating harassment'.
