Developing: Mugabe to resign tonight?

Zimbabweans celebrate after President Robert Mugabe resigns in Harare Zimbabwe

Parliament is due to open impeachment proceedings on Tuesday against Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe since 1980 and is the only leader numerous country's population have ever known.

Scores of Zimbabweans flocked the streets of Harare to celebrate the fall of President Robert Mugabe, who led Zimbabwe since independence from Britain in 1980. Mugabe had refused to resign, delivering a bewildering speech on Zimbabwean television Sunday, in which he called on the nation to end its "bitterness" and "vengefulness".

The announcement came minutes into a joint session of the Zimbabwean Parliament in Harare, convened to prise the 93-year-old from power.

Ahead of parliament's sitting, Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was sacked as Mugabe's deputy and now looks set to replace him, made his first comments since the takeover.

Maimane said Mugabe must step down immediately and Zimbabwe should go to the polls to elect a new government.

It was not clear who would take over from Mugabe.

A few presented placards saying "No to Mugabes dynasty" and also shook their fists in mid-air to show independence, the fist motion was created by South Africa's Nelson Mandela as he left the apartheid prison back in 1990.

Even though Mugabe was rooting his heels when confronted with military tension to step down, he ran out of ways to keep power, he lost his domestic and worldwide aid.

"You can't fire a Revolutionary leader!" he wrote on this Facebook page.

Mnangagwa has not been seen in the country since his dismissal on November 6, but he broke his silence on Tuesday to add his voice to those calling on Mugabe to resign.

Mugabe is revered by some as an elder statesman and independence leader but also reviled by many in Africa and overseas who accuse him of resorting to violence to retain power while running a once promising economy into the ground.

ZANU-PF's central committee is also expected to reinstate Emmerson Mnangagwa as party vice-president, resurrecting the political career of the former security chief, nicknamed The Crocodile, whose sacking this month triggered the military's intervention. Its flourishing economy began to disintegrate after a program of land seizures from white farmers, and agricultural output plummeted and inflation soared.
