Duterte, Philippine President, Boasts He Killed Someone as a Teenager

Two days later, he will host Trump and other world leaders at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, summit, with a 50th-anniversary gala.

Trump says "I'm a very good mediator", but his offer faces many obstacles: for one, China doesn't want the U.S. meddling in the disputes and has balked at the U.S. Navy's incursions into what Beijing considers its territorial waters in the South China Sea.

According to the Filipino news site Rappler, Duterte's boast was made to illustrate that he had no fear of going to jail for overseeing his government's rampage against suspected drug dealers and users, which has been widely criticized by human rights groups.

"At the age of 16, I already killed someone".

The two men are also slated to hold longer, formal talks later today and White House aides signalled that Trump is not expected to publicly bring up human rights in their discussions. But as Trump was about to land on Friday, the White House announced no meeting would take place.

Describing economic security as national security, Trump outlined his vision of a "free and open Indo-Pacific", where all countries played by the rules and engaged in fair trade to achieve prosperity.

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who was accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, attended the opening ceremony along with the other ASEAN Leaders, among them Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The two spoke during an economic conference in Danang, Vietnam.

Eyes will be on whether Trump does the fist pump, having told Duterte in April he was doing a "great job" in his drug war.

"Every time he sees me, he says: 'I didn't do that.' And I believe - I really believe - that when he tells me that, he means it", Trump said, arguing that it makes no sense for him to belabour the issue when Russian Federation could help the USA on North Korea, Syria and other issues.

Since Duterte's inauguration past year, police and affiliated death squads have summarily executed more than 8,000 suspected drug users. And nearly all of them also have the same problem. He said a charitable reading of the meeting would be that Duterte was alluding to human rights issues when he said the drug war was important as an issue of "human development".

Hours after being sworn in as Philippine president, Duterte goes to a Manila slum and urges residents to kill drug-addled neighbors.

By promoting policies that contribute to police misconduct, Duterte is actually encouraging the very criminality that his campaign to wipe out illegal drug use was ostensibly meant to curb.

"(They) should deny the architect of this human rights calamity the worldwide recognition he undeservedly craves".

"When I become president, I'll order the police and the military to find these people and kill them". Duterte, however, made it clear that he won't welcome any discussion on human rights lest he will tell the U.S. leader to "lay off".
