GameStop temporarily halts the new PowerPass rental subscriptions

For now buying games at Game Stop requires old-fashioned monetary exchange

"For those guests who have already purchased the service, we will allow them to bring the pass, and video game they have checked-out, back to receive a full refund", said the spokesperson.

Kotaku reports that GameStop employees have been instructed to remove signage advertising PowerPass from stores.

Last month, GameStop announced a new rental subscription service that would let customers borrow as many used games as they wanted during a six-month period for a flat fee. A GameStop rep since confirmed the news, telling Kotaku, "We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests with an exceptional service". (Those titles would be limited to ones offered at the store's physical locations, rather than through the chain's online inventory.) PowerPass's $60 price-tag would cover six months of playing and swapping, after which customers could select one preowned game to keep permanently.

GameStop hasn't said when it will revive the program.

However, that is all in the past tense, because after a recent soft launch PowerPass has been suspended.

For now, buying games at GameStop requires old-fashioned monetary exchange.

It's unclear why GameStop has made a decision to do this but some store employees suggest that limitations related to the company's old computers likely caused this. Additionally, they can pick out any used game to have for free-not a bad tradeoff.

GameSpot did do a soft launch of its PowerPass service.

There is no word as of yet regarding when PowerPass will return or what changes might be in place based on the "program limitations" that GameStop encountered. According to GameStop's spokesperson, the company ran into several issues with the program in testing it for launch.
