George Clooney returning to TV in Catch-22 adaptation

George Clooney is Returning to TV + More Industry News 11/11-11/17

Paramount Television and Anonymous Content are developing a limited-series adaptation of the classic 1961 novel by Joseph Heller.

"Catch-22" - which will have a script written by Luke Davies and David Michod - follows USA airman Yossarian and his attempts to avoid the fighting in Italy during World War II, as he knows the situation is likely to end in death.

Don't make George Clooney unhappy.

Based off of Heller's own experiences in World War II, the story follows the attempts of disillusioned bomber pilot Captain John Yossarian as he seeks to escape the madness and absurdity of war, only to be blocked at every turn by red tape and opportunistic superiors.

Joining in on the adaptation duties is Luke Davies and David Michod.

"Catch-22" was adapted into a 1970 film by director Mike Nichols.

Clooney and Grant Heslov will direct. Richard Brown and Steve Golin will executive produce on behalf of Anonymous Content along with Clooney and Heslov via Smokehouse Pictures.

Yossarian's only way to avoid the missions is to declare insanity, but the only way to prove insanity is a willingness to embark on unsafe missions, thus creating the novel's absurd 'catch-22'. Clooney played Dr. Doug Ross on the long-running medical drama ER back in the '90s, and was even nominated for two Emmys for his work.

George will star as the somewhat malicious Colonel Cathcart in the series. Clooney exited the show in 1999, and Catch-22 is his first major television project since.
