Google Doodle Celebrates The Hole Puncher On 131st Anniversary

Google doodle hole punch history punching machine hole puncher

There are now dozens of iterations of the hole puncher, including the common two-hole punch, the drill punch and even industrial-sized punches for putting holes in sheets of metal. The gap puncher has either single or numerous opening punch and a long lever which pushes the edge through the sheets of paper giving the same number of gaps as required. The doodle, illustrated by Gerben Steenks, showed the Google logo made of colorful paper circles.

Regardless of model, for any kid who had to add loose-leaf papers to a ringed binder, the hole punch was (and is) a lifesaver.

"The satisfying, tiresome "click!" of the blade as it punches through the sheets".

Google Doodle marked the 131st anniversary of this invention Tuesday. The blue sheet then proceeds to do a little jig. Soennecken called the device "Papierlocher fur Sammelmappen", which means paper hole maker. He also founded his own company F Soennecken Verlag in 1875. Though the hole punch was invented a century ago, nothing much has changed in its outlook.

History tells us we have Friedrich Soennecken, a German entrepreneur and inventor, to thank for this officious yet sometimes physically demanding office tool. Besides the hole puncher, he has invented a binder and a special nib for ink pens suitable for calligraphy. Newer iterations of the machine are also used for more creative purposes like decorative purposes like making confetti.

If the date involved wasn't a giveaway, Google's accompanying blog post makes it pretty clear which side the search engine comes down on, referring to the hole puncher as an essential "artifact of German engineering".

Soennecken introduced the two-hole punch and the ring binder which is used to organise documents by punching holes in sheets of paper often for the objective of collecting the sheets in a binder or folder.
