MLB Rumors: Marlins Talking Giancarlo Stanton Trade With These Four Teams

According to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, the Red Sox have growing interest in Marlins' slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

In addition, the newspaper reports that a Major League source says the Red Sox are "definitely in play" for Stanton.

According to a Friday evening tweet by MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Phillies are among four clubs thus far involved in "preliminary communication" to acquire Stanton from the Miami Marlins, and that talks are expected to "intensify" at next week's meetings. Red Sox owner John Henry and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski confirmed as much last week. While any team would love to have Stanton, the 13-year, $325 million extension he signed in 2014 obviously complicates things.

Heyman also cited the Phillies may be a "tough sell" to get Stanton to waive his full no-trade clause to join them, given they are likely in for "at least another year of rebuilding".

As the Marlins prepare to open shop Monday at the General Managers meetings in Orlando, they're already talking to a handful of teams about Stanton. The others were the Giants, Phillies and Cardinals. That said, Stanton can opt out of his contract following the 2020 season, at which point he'd only be due $77 million. It should be noted that if a well-heeled team such as the Red Sox were to take on all or almost all of his contract, the return cost in players or prospects would not be prohibitive in terms of the Red Sox losing a blue-chop prospect or current young major-leaguer.
