Nearly 20 Percent Of 2016 Race Hate Crimes Were 'Anti-White'

Council on American Islamic Relations
There was nearly a 20 percent increase in anti Muslim incidents in 2016 according to the FBI

Hate crimes in the United States rose moderately past year, with hate-motivated incidents against several target groups, including Arabs, Muslims and transgender people, showing sharper increases, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In Ogden there were 4 reports of hate crimes against someone's sexual orientation; in all there were nine reports of sexual orientation hate crimes.

About 57 percent of the 6,121 incidents reported to law enforcement were motivated by race or ethnicity, with the half of race-related crimes motivated by anti-black bias.

"There's a unsafe disconnect between the rising problem of hate crimes and the lack of credible data being reported", said ADL CEO Jonathan A. Greenblatt.

The yearly report is the most comprehensive accounting of hate crimes in the U.S. But authorities have long warned it is incomplete, in part because it is based on voluntary reporting by police agencies across the country.

The FBI released its 2016 hate crime statistics report Monday.

Sikh Coalition national advocacy manager Sim Singh told NPR that the seven anti-Sikh hate crimes recorded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation previous year "represents the tip of the iceberg". "They not only hurt one victim, but they also intimidate and isolate a victim's whole community and weaken the bonds of our society".

Six hate crimes were related to religion, while five were associated with sexual orientation. The number of participating agencies also varies from year to year. There were 307 crimes against Muslims in 2016, up from 257 in 2015, which at the time was the highest number since the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. No reported crimes were motivated by a disability, gender or gender identity.

The 2016 tallies mark an uptick from 2015, when 15 hate crimes were reported statewide. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has said it would be a top focus of his Justice Department.
