A police official said a suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden vest inside the mosque in Mubi town in Adamawa state, reports Xinhua news agency.

It was the biggest attack in Adamawa since December 2016, when two female suicide bombers killed 45 people at a crowded market in the town of Madagali.

"Seven Boko Haram on two motorbikes met them and slaughtered two, then killed the other four". The group held land around the size of Belgium in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states until early 2015 but was forced out by Nigeria's army and troops from neighbouring countries.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but armed group Boko Haram carries out regular attacks in the region.

Boko Haram has been blamed for more than 20,000 deaths during its almost decade-old insurgency, which has spilled over into neighbouring countries and displaced millions of people, creating a vast humanitarian crisis.

But St-Pierre said despite this "Boko Haram remains an extremely potent and risky organisation" which was far from being "on the back foot", as the military has claimed.

Mohammed Asheik, from the Civilian Joint Task Force assisting the military with security in the northeast, said: "Our people went to the farm to work".

Boko Haram has been blamed for more than 20,000 deaths during its eight-year-old insurgency.

There have been repeated raids and suicide bombings, blamed on Boko Haram remnants pushed out of their camps in the Sambisa Forest.

Boko Haram fighters killed six farmers outside Maiduguri, the civilian militia and the brother of one of the victims said on Monday.

Boko Haram increasingly has been using teenagers or young women as bombers, many of whom have been abducted.
