Patrice Evra: Marseille defender banned from Uefa club matches for seven months

Evra banned for rest of the season by UEFA after Marseille fan kick

That's because the ever-reliable Mohamed Bouhafsi from RMC has revealed that Marseille have terminated Evra's contract as a result of UEFA's punishment.

Marseille had initially suspended the player indefinitely, but shortly after UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) made a decision to ban Evra from playing in UEFA club competition for the rest of this season, the Ligue 1 club announced that his one-year contract had been ripped up "by mutual agreement". "That said, nothing would justify such actions, even less so on the part of a play as experienced and who should be providing an example to those younger than him".

It was always expected that the Ligue 1 club would end Evra's contract with Marseille's American owner Frank McCourt insisting that his behaviour was "unacceptable".

"In that context, the conditions were no longer right for Patrice Evra to accomplish his mission here with serenity or, above all, effectively". Both parties agreed and chose to end their collaboration by mutual agreement.

Marseille, however, did not put the onus entirely on Evra.

He will remain suspended should he sign for a club who is still in European competition. They also again criticised the attitude of the supporters whose provocation led to the player's reaction.

"The club is particularly attached to the atmosphere and recognises the tireless and sometimes hard work of groups of fans, and it intends to punish those of them with that kind of [negative] behaviour".

"In addition, regular meetings with the representatives of the groups will continue and will provide an opportunity to review the measure needed to prevent such excesses".

Today, there is sadness.

Marseille were fined 25,000 euros for a pitch invasion by its fans, who were reported to have insulted Evra during the altercation.
