Post FIFA World Cup appearance, PM Modi meets India's U-17 team

India has achieved astounding growth says Trump at APEC

President Donald Trump praised remarkable growth of India after it opened up the economy and its prime minister Narendra Modi during the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Vietnam. APEC brings together 21 economies from the Pacific region - the equivalent of about 60 per cent of the world's GDP. He also expressed his delight on Jeakson Singh's first ever goal for the country in a FIFA World Cup and termed it as one of the biggest reasons to celebrate for fans across the country. It's a sovereign democracy, as well as, think of this, one of over one billion people is the largest democracy in the world.

In his address, Trump also praised countries like Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia and Japan, which also briefly touched on the bloody history of the Vietnam war, in which Da Nang was a key battlefield.

He added that the United States was ready to make a bilateral deal with any country in the Indo-Pacific region, but only on the basis of "mutual respect and mutual benefit".

Earlier during his Asia visit, Trump had met Chinese premier Xi Jinping and discussed without fuss about the unfair trade practices of China, which is causing "enormous trade deficits they have produced with the U.S.". He said competing with enthusiasm and spirit is the first step to success.

Trump and Prime Minister Modi are scheduled to attend the East Asia Summit beginning next week. Both Modi and Trump might have an interaction during their meeting at the East Asia Summit.

Trump's tone in Vietnam was strikingly different from the day before in Beijing, where the USA president appeared to be friendlier toward the Communist giant as he sought Xi's help to reduce the massive trade deficit and to rein-in nuclear- armed North Korea.

"We have been friends, partners and allies in the Indo- Pacific for a long, long time", he said.
