Reese Witherspoon And 'Friends' Star Jennifer Aniston Returns To Television

Apple has acquired the rights to a new series starring and co-produced by American actresses Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, a spokesperson said on Wednesday (Nov 8).

The series is described as "an inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning, exploring the unique challenges faced by the women (and men) who carry out this daily televised ritual".

However, while details about the morning-show project are vague, given the setting of New York City and the cutthroat world of television news, the show will likely be fairly adult in content. The series has received a straight-to-series, two-season bid from Apple, who are making their first move into the world of scripted programming with this programming.

The untitled Aniston-Witherspoon drama is executive-produced by Media Res' Michael Ellenberg, who previously worked on The Leftovers, with Jay Carson (House of Cards) serving as writer and showrunner. (A second installment is in the works.) The series also reunites the duo after Witherspoon's guest star turn as Aniston's sister on Friends.

Now untitled, the series will look at the look of morning show personalities.

United States alone outside of Paris climate accord as Syria joins
The effort was spearheaded by the Obama administration to codify an global commitment to ward off the impact of climate change. On Oct. 23, Nicaragua announced it would join the Paris accord, despite its previous reservations.

The Witherspoon-Aniston show and "Amazing Stories", however, is the kind of flag-planting Netflix did when it announced "House of Cards" in 2011.

Aniston executive produces through her Echo Films banner; Witherspoon through her Hello Sunshine production company, and Ellenberg through Media Res.

"Amazing Stories" follows an aspect of the Netflix playbook as well by updating a show with some nostalgia appeal: The original ran for two seasons on NBC in the mid-1980s, with Spielberg pretty heavily involved. Amblin Television's Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey and Hart Hanson exec produce the drama from Universal Television.

While Witherspoon just starred in Big Little Lies, the show marks Aniston's first regular TV role since Friends concluded in 2004. To date, Apple's original projects Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karaoke have been released on the subscription-based Apple Music platform, but tech analysts expect Apple to broaden that strategy.
