Releases Twitter Direct Messages After Communications With WikiLeaks Uncovered

Donald Trump Jr. worked on his father's 2016 campaign

At one point, the organization asked for Trump's tax returns.

WikiLeaks, which published emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary ClintonHillary Diane Rodham ClintonGOP rushes to cut ties to Moore Papadopoulos was in regular contact with Stephen Miller, helped edit Trump speech: report Bannon jokes Clinton got her "ass kicked" in 2016 election MORE's campaign chairman, John Podesta, before last year's election, pushed Trump Jr.in the private messages to tweet out links to their work and to check out some of the campaign dirt that they'd come across.

— October 12, 2016: WikiLeaks tells Trump Jr. that it's "great to see you and your dad talking about our publications".

Trump Jr. might not have responded often (although he did a few times in the beginning), but he tweeted and shared some of what WikiLeaks was feeding him, including a link to the trove of emails that he was sent in a DM from WikiLeaks. And they add a new element to the investigations that have been probing for months whether Trump's campaign colluded in any way with the Russian government. Goldstone tells Trump Jr. that the Russians have derogatory information on Clinton that would be "very useful to your father".

"You guys can get all your followers digging through the content", WikiLeaks' message continued. "There's many great stories the press are missing and we're sure some of your follows [sic] will find it. Btw we just released Podesta Emails Part 4". The account is thought to be helmed by the website's publisher Julian Assange and a handful of his closest supporters, including his activist Sarah girlfriend Harrison. "So dishonest! Rigged system!"

Following a report that listed several messages in which WikiLeaks and Donald Trump Jr. appeared to contact each other during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and Trump Jr.

In a series of Monday night tweets, Mr Trump Jr played down his contact with the group, referring to his "whopping 3 responses" which he said one of the congressional committees "has chosen to selectively leak". That matters because it was widely believed at the time that WikiLeaks was posting emails hacked by the Russian government. The U.S. intelligence community and data from cybersecurity firms have tied the hack of Podesta's emails to Russian Federation.

Congressman Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said the messages were "yet another secret communication between the Trump campaign and cut-outs for the Kremlin". "WikiLeaks, I love WikiLeaks".

Tech entrepreneur Rob Glaser was unwittingly embroiled in the national political discourse this week, when a conversation between WikiLeaks and the president's son was published by The Atlantic.

The younger Trump downplayed the news by criticizing the leak of his private communications with WikiLeaks, a website that posts confidential information from governments and other sources, saying they had been previously given to congressional panels.

The messages from WikiLeaks to Trump's oldest son minutes earlier had requested that the presidential candidate tweet out the link to the Clinton campaign emails.

"The PAC is a recycled pro-Iraq war PAC", the WikiLeaks handle wrote.

Trump Jr.at no point rebuffed WikiLeaks' attempts at contact, even though the US intelligence community had already concluded that the organization had published stolen documents and operated on behalf of Russian interests. Trump Jr. asked during one exchange with the WikiLeaks account on October 3.
