Rockford police officer killed after traffic stop

A police officer in IL was apparently shot dead during a traffic stop early Sunday, authorities said.

At this time, the cause of death for Officer Cox has not been released.

Officers responded and found a single vehicle crash approximately two blocks away from the initial traffic stop.

The officer, identified as Jamie Cox, made a traffic stop in the area of State Street and Dawn Avenue at about 1 a.m. That person's identity has not been released.

A Rockford Police officer was shot and killed early Sunday, Nov. 5, on the city's east side.

According to O'Shea, Officer Cox joined the Rockford Police Department in December 2016. It is unclear at this hour if that person was the shooter or if that person remains at large, although police say there is no danger to the public at this time. Officers also located Cox, who was critically injured.

Roads are blocked off in the area and police are not letting anyone through the perimeter they have setup.

Cox was taken to Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he was later pronounced dead, O'Shea said.

The Winnebago-Boone County Integrity Task Force is investigating the use of force by Officer Cox.

The Rockford Police Department is asking anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the Rockford Police Department Investigations Bureau at 779-500-6551 or CrimeStoppers at 815-963-7867.

Cox was married. The Rockford Police Department did not disclose if any arrests have been made as of early Sunday.
