Saving Great Barrier Reef

"In recent years, the impacts of climate change on the Great Barrier Reef have undoubtedly accelerated, as we saw with back-to-back years of coral bleaching".

"Our previous studies in the Philippines funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, showed that corals can grow from microscopic larvae to dinner plate sized adult colonies within three years and they were able to sexually reproduce".

Scientists targeted especially severely damaged coral populations where larvae can not replenish at the appropriate pace for a full restore.

Alroy also suggested numerous Great Barrier Reef's animals would be absent from those reefs and suggested the paper did not fully acknowledge the worsening nature of climate change, which would probably also kill the robust reefs anyway.

"It is vital everyone keeps working to address climate change and build the Reef's resilience, and for restoration strategies to be developed that can work over large areas".

"Indeed, the fact that the study only identified around a hundred of these reefs across the entire 1,400 mile (2,300 kilometer) length of the massive Great Barrier Reef emphasises the need for both effective local protection of critical locations and reduction of carbon emissions in order to support this majestic ecosystem".

Researchers from The University of Queensland, CSIRO, Australian Institute of Marine Science and the University of Sheffield have pinpointed 100 reefs that have the potential to supply larvae to nearly half of the Great Barrier Reef's ecosystem in one year.

"We couldn't more proud or more honoured to be a part of this fantastic first step towards a conservation effort for the Great Barrier Reef", Mr Gash said.

The Great Barrier Reef Foundation managing director, Anna Marsden, said the research is valuable but does not lessen the urgent action needed to combat climate change.

"This work at Heron Island is the first step towards proving we can apply these techniques on the Great Barrier Reef".

Researchers gathered coral sperm and eggs during the mass spawning program from the Great Barrier Reef's island.

Mumby said new information about the reef and the way it functioned and repaired itself was readily adopted by the marine park authorities into its management plans, and received support from the federal government.

"Historically there tends to have been a lot of focus on the pristine, handsome reefs that everyone goes to dive on", said Professor Bythell.

The warming sea temperatures brought the most damage to the corals.

"The Great Barrier Reef is about the size of Italy and at any given time there are patches that have been damaged and patches that are pretty good, so it has an ability to heal itself if you like". Vision, images and interview opportunities available on request.
