Sensex, Nifty plunge amid investor concerns over government finances, retail inflation data

Stock markets

The NSE Nifty50 rose by 12.80 points, or 0.12 per cent, to close at 10,321.75 points, while the BSE Sensex closed at 33,314.56 points - up 63.63 points or 0.19 per cent. Sentiments suffered a jolt after retail inflation climbed to 7-month high in October, dampened hopes of a cut in interest rates by the Reserve Bank at its upcoming policy meet early next month, brokers said. The Nifty ended 1.3 per cent lower for the week, while the Sensex lost 1.1 per cent. Among them are Bank of Baroda, Sun Pharma, Eicher Motors, GAIL, Jaiprakash Associates, MOIL, Reliance Capial, Religare Enterprises, Omaxe, IVRCL, Unitech, Gitanjali Gems, Anant Raj, Apex Frozen and Cadila Healthcare.

Indian markets continued to fall for the second day on Tuesday. Sensex was down by over 62 points or 0.19% at 32,971.24 while the wider Nifty was down by over 32 points or 0.32% at 10,192.25.

Jain said markets are expected to be "subdued" going ahead, but the overall picture still looks good for India, as July-September earnings have been better-than-expected for most companies.

The broader NSE index closed 0.38 percent lower at 10,186.60, while the benchmark BSE index dropped 0.28 percent to 32,941.87. Inflation at the wholesale level rose to 6-month high of 3.59 per cent in October as the prices of food articles, led by onions and vegetables, rose sharply.

Market breadth was negative with 754 advances against 1,125 declines.
