Shalane Flanagan becomes first American woman since 1977 to win NYC Marathon

Kenya's Geoffrey Kamworor won the New York City Marathon men's title on Sunday, taking his first victory at the distance as the race took place just five days after a deadly Manhattan truck attack left eight people dead.

Flanagan placed sixth in the women's marathon in at the Rio Olympics past year, the top American finish.

Ethiopia's Mamitu Daska, who was running in the New York City Marathon for the first time, finished third, with a time of 2:28:08.

On the men's side, Geoffrey Kamworwor was the victor in an unofficial 2:10:53, three years faster than Wilson Kipsang in a race that marked the 26th and final marathon as a professional for Meb Keflezighi, Now 42, the man whose bib says simply "Meb", won the NYC marathon in 2009 and the Boston Marathon in 2014. "It's a moment I'm trying to soak up and savor".

Flanagan, the 2010 NY marathon runner-up, was sixth in last year's Rio Olympic marathon.

The last time that happened was in 1977, when Miki Gorman won - for the second year in a row - with a time of 2:43:10.

Shalane Flanagan wins her first world marathon title.

NY heavily bolstered security for the event, parking more sand trucks to prevent vehicle attacks and stationing extra police on streets. She had blown away the field here a year ago, winning by a margin (3 minutes 34 seconds) not seen in the women's race since 1980. Waitz is also the all-time great of the NYC Marathon, with more consecutive wins (5) and more overall wins (9) than any racer in any division.

More than 50,000 participants ran the world famous race and some 2.5 million people packed the streets to cheer on the athletes from around the world.
