The NATO-led mission said in a release that the service member's operation took place in Logar province.

General John Nicholson, the top United States of America commander in Afghanistan, said: "We offer our deepest condolences to the family of our fallen brother". The 36-year-old was assigned to 4th Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, a unit known as the "Night Stalkers", at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.

The military has not yet released details about how he was killed.

On October 28, the military said a soldier died a day earlier after sustaining injuries in a helicopter crash in Kharwar district, although it added the incident was not a result of enemy action.
