StarCraft II is going free-to-play on November 14th

Regardless of how much Starcraft II content you now own, you'll be able to play the complete and full version of the competitive multi-player game right from the get-go-even if the amount of Starcraft II you now own is "none". At BlizzCon, the company announced the game will be going free-to-play.

As explained on the Battle.net blog, players will be able to download StarCraft II's original "Wings of Liberty" single-player campaign for free. Online multiplayer and select commanders will also be free. The free version will include the full campaign, but that doesn't take long to beat. As for co-op commander missions, all commanders will be free-to-play up to level 5 with Kerrigan, Artanis and Raynor available for uncapped progression beyond that. For everyone else, the free play period starts November 14. The multiplayer is what people are really after, and the free version provides access to regular ranked play. "We want everybody to always be in the big same player pool and we don't want other players to feel like they're locked out of playing with their friends because they haven't bought a particular set of maps [or characters]", he said. The remaining two campaigns are still paid products at $15 each. There is also a bundle for $40.

Last year, Overwatch Assistant Game Director Aaron Keller told Ars that he didn't foresee any eventual free-to-play, DLC-driven pivot for Blizzard's popular first-person shooter. You still have to build additional pylons-no one's going to try and sell you packs of pylons for $0.99.

So what happens if you already own Wings of Liberty, you ask?

As a thank you to existing players, those who already owned the game before October 31 2017 will get themselves three portraits and an Eidolon Ghost skin.
