Target selling fidget spinners with potentially risky levels of lead

Company representatives argue that a fidget spinner is not a toy because such products are not intended for kids 14 and older. However, these toys could be on the way out as well.

Lab results showed that two types of fidget spinners contained well over the legal limit for lead, which is 100 parts per million (ppm) in children's products.

Target is hawking fidget spinners that contain unsafe amounts of lead, according to a consumer advocacy group.

CBS News reports that a Target spokesman said in a written statement that the fidget spinners did not need to meet federal lead limits because they were not marketed as children's toys, but rather general use products. Young kids are also more likely to put products that contain high amounts of lead in their mouths and near their noses.

The Fidget Wild Premium Spinner in Metal tested at 1,300 parts per million.

Fidget spinners are supposed to be calming and fun, especially for students struggling to focus.

The spinners are distributed by Bulls i Toy.

Target responded that those particular models were not recommended for consumers under the age of 14, negating prescribed lead restrictions for children.

Shares of Target were last seen down fractionally at $58.17, with a consensus analyst price target of $59.28 and a 52-week range of $48.56 to $79.33. "All of our product are tested and comply with [Consumer Product Safety Commission] safety standards".

Target is selling fidget spinners with potentially risky lead levels, according to a new study. A CBS News report details results from a consumer advocacy group who tested the devices (after catching wind of a potential issue from the Lead Safe Mama Facebook page). Below that, it says the manufacturer categorizes the toy as being for ages "6 years and up".

U.S. PIRG Toxics Director Kara Cook-Shultz told CBS News that the Target website described the two spinner models for ages "6 and up" on the retailer's website, but the product page now reflects a "14 and older" description. However, even as the holidays approach, Target is not backing down on its stance to sell the product both in its stores nationwide, and on its website.
