The Pentagon will test fighter jets with laser weapons by 2021

LOCKHEED MARTINLockheed Martin will create laser-fitted fighter jets

Lockheed Martin has been awarded $26m by the United States government's Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) to develop a high-power fibre laser that will be tested on a fighter jet by 2021.

Under a $26.3 million contract from the Air Force Research Lab, the firm will design and produce a directed energy system for aircraft, with plans to test the technology by 2021. By 2021 is to be tested a laser mounted on a tactical American fighter.

Last August, Northrop won the $39 million beam control portion of SHiELD, known as Turret Research in Aero-Effects (STRAFE), while Boeing won the $90 million Laser Pod Research and Development (LPRD) contract.

LANCE is created to operate in a compact environment, and as such, the Lockheed Martin team focused on developing a compact, high efficiency laser within challenging size, weight and power constraints. "It's a completely new and different challenge to get a laser system into a smaller, airborne test platform". Lockheed Martin is a defense, aerospace and technology company headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland.

Wentworth Miller Teases Captain Cold's Final Arrowverse Appearance
One of the most prominent characters in the Arrowverse's stable of villains and antiheroes is leaving superheroism behind. Grateful - now and in advance - to a pair of talented casts and hardworking crews.Thank you.

The air force apparently wants to one day use the lasers for self-defense. "It's exciting to see this technology mature enough to embed in an aircraft", said Afzal.

Unlike the colorful, bullet-like lasers that fly back and forth between Stormtroopers and Rebel soldiers in the "Star Wars" films, real-life laser weapons are invisible and travel to their targets at the speed of light. The weapons system will supposedly protect forces from missiles and drones.

Lockheed is one of the primary developers of aircraft for USA defense programs, including the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter.
